Villa rustica (Römisches Landgut) bei Wachenheim
Schon vor 2.000 Jahren waren die Römer in der Pfalz und brachten den Weinbau mit. Ein Beleg dafür ist die 1980 bei Flurbereinigungsarbeiten in der Nähe von Wachenheim entdeckte Villa rustica. Es handelt sich um einen einst stattlichen Gutshof, der mit seinen spektakulären Funden ein Kulturdenkmal von großem Wert darstellt. Wir fahren mit S- Bahn und Regionalbahn nach Wachenheim und wandern von dort zur Villa rustica, wo uns eine interessante Führung erwartet. Diese dauert ca. eine Stunde. Danach besteht die Möglichkeit, sich die Ruine auf eigene Faust genauer anzuschauen oder ein kleines Picknick zu machen. Zurück geht es nach Bad Dürkheim, von wo aus wir mit der Deutschen Bahn oder der Rhein-Haardt-Bahn nach Mannheim fahren.

Eberstadter Tropfsteinhöhle bei Buchen/Odenwald
Die sehenswerte Höhle wurde 1971 zufällig bei Sprengarbeiten in einem Steinbruch entdeckt und bereits ein Jahr später als flächenhaftes Naturdenkmal unter Schutz gestellt. Es handelt sich um eine 610 m lange Karsthöhle, die mit einer Vielfalt an Tropfsteinen und Sinterbildungen unterschiedlichster Größen, Formen und Färbungen beeindruckt. Im Ramen einer ca. einstündigen Führung werden wir u.a. Interessantes zu Entstehung und Geschichte der Höhle erfahren, deren Alter auf ein bis zwei Millionen Jahre geschätzt wird. In der Höhle liegt die Temperatur konstant bei 11 °C und die Luftfeuchtigkeit etwa bei 95%. Wir fahren zunächst mit der S-Bahn nach Seckach und wandern von dort zur Höhle. Nach der Besichtigung besteht die Möglichkeit zum Picknick oder zur Besichtigung der Ausstellung im Besucherzentrum. Zurück geht es zum Bahnhof Bödigheim und von dort über Seckach nach Mannheim.

UNESCO-Welterbestätte Grube Messel
Anmeldeschluss mit Vorauskasse ist der 12. Mai 2024.
Die weltbekannte Fossilienfundstätte Grube Messel bietet einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Zeit des Eozäns vor etwa 47,8 Mio. Jahren, als sich nach dem Aussterben der Dinosaurier die Säugetiere zu entwickeln begannen. Zur damaligen Zeit herrschte in unserer Region tropisches Klima und ein üppiger Regenwald beherbergte eine Vielzahl von Pflanzen und Tieren. Die Funde sind nicht nur hinsichtlich der Artenvielfalt, sondern insbesondere durch die ungewöhnlich gute Erhaltung einzigartig. Zu den berühmtesten Funden zählen z.B. die Urpferdchen und Unikate wie Ameisenbär und Urtapir.
Vom Bahnhof Messel wandern wir den Urpferdchen-Weg zur Grube, wo wir zur Grubenführung erwartet werden. Die Führung dauert ca. eine Stunde und bietet einen direkten Einblick in die Fundstätte. Während der 2 km langen Tour werden die Entstehung der Grube Messel, des Ölschiefers und der Fossilien von ausgebildeten Geo- oder Biowissenschaftlern erläutert. Danach besteht die Möglichkeit, sich die interessante Dauerausstellung mit Originalfossilien anzuschauen. Nach der Besichtigung wandern wir zum Naturfreudehaus Auf der Moret, wo wir eine längere Rast einlegen. Zurück bei der Grube Messel können wir uns aufteilen: entweder mit dem Bus direkt zur Darmstädter Innenstadt oder auf bewährtem Wege zurück zum Messeler Bahnhof.

Villa rustica (Roman country estate) near Wachenheim
The Romans were already in the Palatinate 2,000 years ago and brought viticulture with them. Evidence of this is the Villa rustica discovered in 1980 during land consolidation work near Wachenheim. It was once a stately manor house which, with its spectacular finds, is a cultural monument of great value. We take the S-Bahn and regional train to Wachenheim and walk from there to the Villa rustica, where an interesting guided tour awaits us. This lasts about an hour. Afterwards, we can take a closer look at the ruins on our own or have a small picnic. We return to Bad Dürkheim, from where we take the Deutsche Bahn or the Rhein-Haardt-Bahn to Mannheim.

Eberstadt Dripstone Cave near Buchen/Odenwald
The cave, which is well worth a visit, was discovered by chance in 1971 during blasting work in a quarry and protected as a natural monument just one year later. It is a 610 m long karst cave with a variety of stalactites and stalagmites of different sizes, shapes and colors. During a one-hour guided tour, we will learn interesting facts about the formation and history of the cave, which is estimated to be between one and two million years old. The temperature in the cave is a constant 11°C and the humidity is around 95%. We take the train to Seckach and walk to the cave. After the tour you can have a picnic or visit the exhibition in the visitor center. We return to Bödigheim station and from there via Seckach to Mannheim.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Messel Pit

The world-famous Messel Pit fossil site offers a fascinating insight into the Eocene period around 47.8 million years ago, when mammals began to evolve after the extinction of the dinosaurs. At that time, the climate in our region was tropical and a lush rainforest was home to a variety of plants and animals. The finds are unique not only in terms of the diversity of species, but also because of their unusually good preservation. Among the most famous finds are the prehistoric horses and unique specimens such as the anteater and the prehistoric tapir.
From Messel station, we walk along the Urpferdchen trail to the mine, where we are expected for a guided tour. The tour lasts about an hour and offers a direct insight into the site. During the 2 km long tour, the formation of the Messel pit, the oil shale and the fossils are explained by trained geoscientists or bioscientists. Afterwards, there is the opportunity to view the interesting permanent exhibition with original fossils. After the tour, we walk to the Naturfreudehaus Auf der Moret, where we take a longer break. Back at the Messel Pit, we can split up: either take the bus directly to Darmstadt city center or take the tried and tested route back to Messel train station.
